During the summer 2008 period Malév operates its own and leased aircraft to 50 cities in 37 countries. Planes of the Hungarian national carrier make an average 140 take-offs each day.
Malév ups its frequencies on both the Stockholm and the Stuttgart routes by one flight to two per day on five days of the week. The morning and evening services allow Hungarian business travellers to arrange their affairs in the Swedish and German cities in a single day, if needed. The twice daily, morning and evening flights to Copenhagen are complemented by a further five connections each week, while the Tirana and Timisoara routes both have three more night flights per week added during the summer timetable period compared to the winter.
Something totally new from 30 March is the introduction of Malév\'s own aircraft flying to Cluj-Napoca and Milan; formerly these destinations were serviced by the fleet of Carpatair and Alitalia, respectively. The Hungarian flag carrier ensures two daily connections to both destinations. The two Malév services a day from Cluj-Napoca - one in the afternoon and one at night - are timed to link in to the airline\'s Western European schedule. As a result, the distance between the Transylvania city plus its catchment area and Budapest and all key destinations in Europe is considerably shortened, in the process promoting the continued tourism, economic and cultural development of Transylvania.
In Moscow, Malév has shifted its operations to the modern and dynamically developing air hub at Domodedovo. In terms of traffic indicators, today Domodedovo is the leading airport in Moscow, and it can provide Malév passengers with rapid and convenient connections to the networks of AiRUnion and other Russian airlines. What is more, it is the chosen hub for oneworld member airlines, too. By making the switch the Hungarian national airline has created the opportunity to access the largest cities in Russia from Budapest via Moscow, and to allow those travellers arriving from the Russian markets to fly on with Malév to destinations in Western, Southern and Central Europe.
Direct flights to New York restart on 2 May, while Toronto becomes accessible by Malév Boeing 767 from 26 May. Thanks to enhanced code-share cooperation with American Airlines, Malév codes are posted on a total 36 AA flights a day; this presence is of huge marketing value on the North American continent beyond the immediate commercial yields it brings. For passengers, it means the benefit of rapid and convenient travel to 14 American cities via New York.
This summer the timetable once again features one of the most popular Spanish holiday resorts of the past few years, Malaga, known as the gateway to Andalusia, which Malév covers twice a week.
Given the low turnover during the summer, the airline closes its Bangkok flight from the end of April. Aircraft of the Hungarian fleet fly to Cairo and Lyon until the middle of May. The Malév Munich route is being closed down because of the long-term decline in the load factor and the abovementioned increases in flight frequencies on many other routes. Among the former summer destinations Dubrovnik does not feature in this year\'s summer timetable; instead, Malév is reallocating its resources into more profitable routes.
The summer timetable of the Hungarian national carrier comes into effect at 00.00 hours on the last Sunday in March i.e. 30 March, at the very same time the switch is made from winter to summer time. The change in time does not cause problems for passengers since the new timetable is based on the new timekeeping (summer time).
The Schengen rules come into force at Ferihegy airport from the start of this year\'s summer timetable, which brings changes to the operations of Malév and therefore its passengers, too. From this moment passport controls at the Ferihegy air border for all travellers flying to Schengen states cease. As a consequence of the new regulations, in future Malév will not only operate from Terminal 2A. All flights to and from Schengen countries continue to operate out of 2A, while non-Schengen traffic goes through 2B.
Malév asks its customers to check - before departure of the flight - which terminal (A or B) their flight departs from, or which terminal it arrives at so that anyone waiting to meet them is at the correct place. In addition, the Hungarian national airline continues to recommend that its passengers arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before flight departure
